Thiruvananthapuram: A probe will be conducted on the violent incidents that occurred during the ‘Whatsapp hartal’ held in Kerala on Monday in protest over the Kathua rape and murder incident.

The DGP has formed an investigation team to conduct the probe. The team will probe whether organizations with extremist views played any role in the violent incidents.

The team will also probe whether media was misused for this purpose.

This is the first time in the history of the state that such a hartal has taken place. There were widespread incidents of violence in the Malabar region under the cover of hartal. 130 persons were taken into custody in Malappuram alone for indulging in violence. More than 60 cases were registered. Apart from this, similar incidents happened in Kasaragod and Kozhikode regions and in Thiruvananthapuram. The police decided to probe the role of extremist organizations following this.

The investigation team has been formed including officers from the Intelligence department also. The team will probe whether there was any other agenda behind the calling of the hartal through WhatsApp. There were complaints from various places that the police failed in preventing the violent incidents. The special investigation team has been formed in this scenario.
