New Delhi: Senior Congress leader PJ Kurien has once again criticised AICC general secretary and former chief minister Oommen Chandy.

Kurien alleged that the Rajya Sabha seat was allotted to Kerala Congress to remove him and PC Chacko. This time, Kurien reiterated the charges against Oommen Chandy in New Delhi.

“The group is more important for Oommen Chandy than the party. He will remove those who oppose him. I was alloted the seat in 1981 not because of the insistence of Ooommen Chandy or Aryadan Muhammad, as claimed by Oommen Chandy. It was Vayalar Ravi who proposed my name. AK Antony supported it. I had not approached anybody for the seat. Vayalar Ravi visited my house and persuaded my parents. Hence, I contested. I agree that Oommen Chandy is popular. However, what is the result of the three elections led by Oommen Chandy? The party lost two times. When we gained power, we got the majority of two seats only. There are leaders who are more populist than Oommen Chandy. I am not a populist. However, I am a person who promptly undertakes the work allotted by the party,” Kurien said.

When I contested in Mavelikkara in 1980, it was an LDF constituency. I won five times from there,” he said.

Kurien said that he was made a chief whip by both Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

The giving away of the Rajya Sabha seat will benefit the BJP, he said. This decision will result in communal polarisation in Kerala, Kurien added.
