New Delhi: Flights under the regional connectivity scheme known as UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik) will begin operation from Kannur International Airport from June. The low-cost services will begin services even before the new airport becomes fully operational, Civil Aviation Secretary R N Choubey informed the Parliament Standing Committee on Tuesday.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is completely satisfied with the progress of the greenfield project, he said. An official application to start flight services should be submitted in March, he said in a reply to a query raised by K C Venugopal MP at a high-level meeting yesterday.

UDAN services will connect Kannur with Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Bengaluru, Hubli, Chennai, Goa, Delhi and Mumbai.

In response to the MP’s query on Kozhikode airport, Choubey said the Airport Authority of India had examined if Kozhikode airport can be allowed to operate wide-bodied Code E aircraft. A decision in this regard will be taken once the AAI submits its report. At present, Code D aircraft are operating from Kozhikode.
